Mr. Cumming currently serves as CEO & Managing Director of Cumming & Associates LLC, a strategic advisory firm formed
in 2014 to exclusively serve the healthcare industry.
Prior to launching Cumming & Associates, Mr. Cumming spent fourteen years at Hologic, Inc., a publicly listed NASDAQ company. He joined Hologic in August 2000 as Senior Vice President and President of Lorad, a Hologic company. Mr. Cumming was promoted to President & CEO of Hologic in 2001 and later assumed the role as Chairman.
Mr. Cumming stepped down as Chairman in September of 2011 and then served as Global Strategic Advisor with a focus on expanding Hologic’s international presence, which culminated with acquisitions in China in 2011. In July of 2013, the Board of Directors asked Mr. Cumming to reassume the role of President & CEO with the express direction of restructuring the company. Mr. Cumming formally retired from Hologic in December of 2013.
Under Mr. Cumming’s leadership of Hologic, beginning in 2001, Hologic’s market capitalization increased from $78 million to over $10 billion, while revenues grew from approximately $100 million to over $2.5 billon. During his tenure, the company’s stock rose from under $3.78 to $70.00, and then split and rose to $60 and split again. Moreover, during this time period the company acquired over a dozen companies whose products harmonized their women’s health care portfolio.
During Mr. Cumming’s tenure as CEO, Hologic achieved an unprecedented market share leadership position in nine categories spanning Breast Health, Diagnostics, and Surgical. Mr. Cumming directly attributes this achievement to the entire Hologic team whose passionate, dedicated, and unwavering belief in making a difference in the lives of women differentiated them from their competitors.
In 2007, Frost & Sullivan named Mr. Cumming CEO of the Year. In March of 2011 Mr. Cumming was named recipient of the 2011 National Consortium of Breast Centers Inspiration Award winner. He is the only person from “industry” to have been awarded this prestigious honor.
During Mr. Cumming’s tenure with Hologic he appeared on leading national financial news programs, was a featured speaker at health symposiums around the world, and received many honors for his work on promoting access to health for women in underserved areas of the world. Mr. Cumming has devoted his time and philanthropic efforts to making a difference in the lives of women and children.
Prior to joining Hologic, Mr. Cumming served as President and Managing Director of HealthCare Markets Group (HCMG), a strategic advisory and investment-banking firm he founded in 1984, which exclusively served the healthcare industry. While serving as Managing Director of HCMG, the firm completed over $2.0 billion in transactions. Mr. Cumming worked closely with some of the industry’s leading healthcare companies on improving performance, enhancing shareholder value, established distribution networks in the United States, Europe, and the Pacific Rim, and formulated and implemented restructuring initiatives. Mr. Cumming directed turnarounds, initiated acquisitions and divestitures, formed alliances and joint ventures, raised capital in the form of equity and debt, counseled companies relative to initial public offerings and private placements, and formulated strategic growth initiatives.
During his tenure with HCMG, Mr. Cumming participated in a broad range of assignments with a diverse client list composed of a cross-section of public and private healthcare companies, from startups to multinational, billion dollar conglomerates. Advisory and investment banking assignments included this representative list of clients: GE Medical Systems, Abbott, Allergan, 3M Medical Group, Telectronics, Columbia/HCA, Miles Diagnostics, Tenet Healthcare, Philips Medical Systems, Toshiba Medical Systems, Dornier Medical Systems, OEC Medical Systems, Endosonics, Libel-Flarsheim, and Interim Healthcare. Mr. Cumming authored HealthCare Markets Group’s highly acclaimed “Annual Healthcare Industry Report”, which was recognized as the most comprehensive compilation of financial and trending information on the healthcare industry. The Report reviewed the financial performance of more than 900 public healthcare companies over five-years in 36 market segments.
Prior to forming HCMG, Mr. Cumming was Vice President and Division Manager for Elscint, Inc., a full line manufacturer of diagnostic imaging equipment. He became a member of Elscint’s management team through the acquisition of Xonics. He joined Xonics through the acquisition of RDC, where he served as Vice President, Sales & Marketing.
Mr. Cumming currently is Trustee of Counsel at Bentley University and previously served as a member of the Board of Trustees. In addition, the Cumming Family is a distinguished member of Bentley’s Great Benefactor Society. Mr. Cumming is also a member of the Luther Rice Society of The George Washington University.
Mr. Cumming joined the board of directors of T2 BioSystems in 2014 prior to its initial public offering and serves on the corporate governance and nominating committees.
Mr. Cumming also serves as a member of the Finance Committee for the Radiological Society of North America and was an early member of the Massachusetts Life Science Collaborative Leadership Council.
Mr. Cumming attended the University of South Carolina and received a Doctor of Commercial Science (honoris causa) from Bentley University.
On the personal side, Mr. Cumming and his wife Pamela have been married for over 30 years and are active in the Cumming Family Foundation, which was established to fund projects primarily focused on health issues for women and children globally.
The Cumming Family Foundation has been an active supporter of Dana Farber Hospital through the establishment of the Cumming Family Sarcoma Experimental Therapy Project, and established a program for Cervical Cancer Research. Special long term programs have also been established at Newton Wellesley Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital. The Cumming Family Trust also founded the Bentley Women’s Leadership initiative. The Foundation is a long-time and proud supporter of The Inner City Scholarship Fund of Boston, The Susan Komen Foundation Southwest Florida, The Dream Project of the Dominican Republic, The Children’s Trust, UK, and the SmileTrain.
Mr. Cumming’s personal interests are focused on his children, expanding his family’s philanthropic activities, participating in marathons, triathlons, cycling, and broadening his photographic portfolio.
